Out & About|| Aquum in Clapham

Alex and I ventured South of the river – a rare occasion, but it never seems to disappoint – to check out the food & drink at the newly relaunched Aquum, on Clapham High Street.

Aquum can be found halfway between Clapham Common and Clapham North, nestled on the High Street, close to several other bars and restaurants. It’s recently had a makeover, and has relaunched as a greek food destination and bar, which is open until 3.30am – they have a DJ too, making it place you got spend all evening and get a boogie on (or throw some shapes, depending on your dancing style).

The interior is really contemporary and sleek – I loved the hanging decor!

I started with a Fairy Tail Fizz (Blueberry infused Bombay Sapphire, lavender, lemon juice, sugar, egg white, soda) and Alex a Spiced Passion (Hennessy VS, Bacardi Oakheart, lime juice, passion fruit sugar syrup, fresh passion fruit and a dash of bitters. Passion fruit as you have never had it, sweet and tangy).

I love a gin cocktail, and this one didn’t disappoint. The Fairy Tail Fizz was light and refreshing, and a little sweet. Alex’s Spiced Passion was a big hit with both of us. Slightly bitter, but at the same time pretty sweet, it had a strong passion fruit flavour with a slight edge from the lime and rum – a fab combination of flavours!

We got to try a few canapes – The clam and black eyed bean was really tasty, fresh and crisp, and we really enjoyed the chicken liver parfait which was served on tiny little pieces of bread, it was rich and flavoursome.

We were debating whether to head to the bar for our second cocktail, when someone popped over to take our order. Alex ordered a Strawberry and Vanilla Mojito next (Lime juice, vanilla sugar, mint, Aquums own strawberry infused Appletons Signature Blend and soda. The classic, infused with our blend of strawberry rum and vanilla sugar), whilst I opted for the Berry Bambalam (Belvedere vodka, elderflower cordial, lime juice and Crème de Mûre). Alex’s Mojito was good, but the strawberry and vanilla flavour wasn’t coming through quite strong enough for me (it tasted almost like a standard mojito), but my Berry Bambalam was awesome! It was really juicy, and the elderflower added something extra to the mix, it was so tasty!

We had one more before heading off – a Berry Got Back (Eristoff Vodka or Bombay Sapphire gin with Crème de Frambois, Disaronno Amaretto, raspberry purée, fresh raspberry, lemon and cranberry juice with sugar syrup.) and a Caribbean Cooler (Bacardi Carta Blanca, Goslings Black Seal, Wray and Nephew, guava juice, lemon juice, sugar syrup and Angostura bitters) – Both super tasty! I had  Berry got back with Vodka, not sure why I didn’t choose gin, but the mixture of flavours, including the addition of amaretto was so good.

Overall, our evening at Aquum was fab – The interior was gorgeous, cocktails were all seriously yummy, and service was pretty great too. We didn’t get to try much of the food, but what we did try made me want to go back to try more.

With cocktails priced between £9 and £12.50, it’s about average for London prices. If you’re planning a night out South of the river, do go check it out.

Where’s your favourite place to enjoy a cocktail or two?
