I love Ice Cream, and could easily sit there with a tub and a spoon, eating until I feel sick. It’s so moreish, and used to be my go-to film snack back in the day – Ben & Jerry’s Caramel Chew Chew was a constant addition to my freezer.

These days I try not to buy too much ice cream, as I know how much it derails me from a balanced diet. I say balanced quite lightly here, as I try to be relatively healthy in the week, and exercise regularly, so that I can treat myself at weekends. I do love the odd burger!

I’m always looking for dessert alternatives, as Alex loves a sweet treat to end the evening, and I usually just stick to my low cal hot chocolate, with marshmallows of course. So this is where this recipe comes in!

Made with just bananas and cocoa powder, it’s a healthy take on ice cream, yet just as tasty. The banana gives it a thick, creamy texture, and the cocoa powder adds a slightly chocolatey touch – although it’s still got a strong banana taste. Only slightly icier than a scoop of ice cream, it’s almost a sorbet/ice cream hybrid.

Delicious on its own, it could also be topped with chopped dark chocolate pieces (70% or higher for extra nutritional benefits) or fresh berries. Alex had his with a little whipped cream which he said went well too, but for me it takes away the point of having a healthy ice cream.

2-Ingredient Chocolate Ice Cream (Dairy Free)

A great alternative to ice cream, this creamy 2 ingredient dairy-free recipe makes a delicious healthy dessert option. 

Servings 2

Ingredients

  • 3 bananas (ripe work best)
  • 1 1/2 tbsp cocoa powder

Instructions

  1. Break the banana into pieces and freeze in a tupperware box for 3-4 hours, or overnight if you have time.

  2. Remove the banana pieces from the freezer and blend in a food processor or Nutribullet until smooth. Add the cocoa powder and blend until well combined. 

  3. Pour the mixture back into the tupperware box and re-freeze for 2 hours, or until frozen. 

  4. Remove your ice cream from the freezer 5 or so minutes before serving, to allow to soften slightly. Serve as desired.
