Who knew mango could inspire so many dishes. And such creative vegetarian ones to be exact.
On Saturday evening, Lucy and I broke our supperclub virginity and attended the 8 plates popup event – an ode to the Mango.
The 8 plates vegetarian popup was founded by Roshni, who wanted to put her love for food (inspired by her mum) and creativity with new dishes, along with a passion for hosting to good use. Taking place in Roshni’s living room, each supper club has no more than eight spaces (hence the name), making it a seriously exclusive yet friendly event.
The early birds last weekend, we arrived armed with a small bottle of gin, to fulfill the BYOB part of the evening. After a really warm welcome, we made ourselves feel comfortable and at home in Roshni’s living room, which was beautifully decorated and set up for our evening. I definitely suffered interior envy!
Introductions out the way, we all started getting to know one another, and chatting about holidays, jobs and many other topics whilst sipping on our welcome mango cocktail – short, sweet and juicy, it made for a refreshing start.
The five courses which followed all used mango in quite diverse, creative and unique ways. Each producing a wow or moment of awe from the table of seven guests.
The Green Mango Chutney, Cauliflower Puffs, Spicy Red Sauce, Sesame & Kalonji Flatbread arrived beautifully presented.
Lightly spiced, with the spicy red sauce to add an extra kick, if desired, it was packed with flavour, and every mouthful was savoured. You could tell from the very start that Roshni gets her influences from the Middle East and India.
The Mango, Sweetcorn and Chilli Salsa, Lettuce Wrap, Feta Beignet and Coriander Chutney, was a mix of juicy fresh and vibrant herb flavours.
The feta beignet, a deep fried choux pastry encasing soft rich cheese, neutralizing the herbs from the potent coriander chutney ever so slightly. Absolutely delicious.
Our surprise course of the evening was a Mango and Rainbow Vegetable Salad with Rice Noodles and Hot and Sour Coconut Dressing.
A fantastic mix of textures and flavours – the soft mango against the crunchy carrot and nuts, and the sweet and sour flavours combining beautifully, not overpowering the underlying coconut taste.
My favourite dish of the evening however had to be the Sticky Mango Sauce, Chargrilled Paneer, Onions and Peppers, served with Spicy Raita and Rice.
Herby a la dente rice, served topped neatly with the thick cubes of mild paneer which reminded me a little of halloumi (an absolute fave, but not quite as rubbery) and the juicy roasted peppers and onions, all in a sticky, not overly sweet mango sauce – it completely upped the stakes on how veggie rice dishes should be served.
The spicy raita wasn’t just for presentation either, crisp and flavoursome in it’s own right.
If that wasn’t enough the evening finished with a Mango Strikhand Mousse and Almond Tuile, served with Rose Jelly, Raspberries, Mango and a Pistachio Crumb. An indulgent and creamy semi-frozen mango mousse, it tasted like a cross between premium ice cream, froyo and fresh mango.
The little wobbly cubes of rose jelly, plump raspberries and fresh mango around the edge added to the beautiful presentation, as well as enhancing the textures and flavours. The almond tuile, delicate with a light almond flavour, thoroughly enjoyed alongside.
An impressive menu and beautiful setting, it was lovely to be part of such an intimate event, and to spend it with people you perhaps wouldn’t normally. At just over £35pp it’s a similar price to what you’d spend on a three course meal and a cocktail at a nice restaurant. Roshni even holds private events, which would be perfect for birthdays and celebrations, so if you have something special coming up, I’d highly recommend looking into this – this might be my plan for my birthday next year 😉
