Bottomless Brunch. The weekend plan which has become THE thing to do with a Saturday/Sunday. So much so that even restaurants you wouldn’t expect to offer a brunch menu, like Shackfuyu has jumped on the bandwagon.

Due a brunch catch up with Sandy, we decided to try Asia de Cuba. The pan Asian restaurant located inside St. Martin’s Lane hotel, where I went recently to try the new spring menu. Well what can I say, I was converted into a fan. Read that review here

Seated at our reserved little table for two in the corner, it was the perfect spot for a good gossip and giggle. We got settled for our two hour slot of eating and drinking until we burst. That’s pretty much the point right?

Sat in the lower section of the restaurant to where I was before, it had the same look and feel, but was just a tiny bit more atmospheric with the light slightly dimmed. With white table cloths, clean white walls filled with portraits and paintings, dark woods, a couple of dark feature walls and deep red leather booths and curtains, it had an almost movie set feel to it. This time however, they also had a live band playing acoustic for the guests! They were awesome.

Super attentive, our waiter explained the menu and the three different brunch packages. We went for the middle priced option – starters, main, dessert and bottomless brunch cocktails, before leaving us to ponder in the knowledge of his recommendations. The main menu itself wasn’t extensive, with 11 options. But everything sounded so good, that the indecisiveness kicked in. Or perhaps fear of food envy!

Mimosas or bellinis has to be one of the toughest breakfast decisions. Both sweet and juicy, with a decent fizz. They were topped up constantly as soon as each glass neared a quarter full. Now that’s what I call service.

The starters, or sharers for the table, served as a range of tasty appetizers whilst enjoying our first glass (or two) of fizz.

Most were pastries of the fluffy and flaky variety. The tender, meaty chicken chicharrones were a firm favourite. As well as the crunchy spring rolls, with soft rich ropa vieja filling (beef and vegetables). There was also a tender, juicy salmon ceviche in a delicious light sauce. The portion of delicately cut plantain and malanga crisps, with a chunky black bean dip, went down well too.

A fantastic selection. For those who aren’t meat eaters, we were very tempted by the vegetarian option too!

Mains were beautifully presented, and sure impressed with flavour too!

The Cuban Benedict, a Caribbean take on the eggs benny, was piled with tender and flavoursome pulled pork, perfectly poached eggs (the second stayed runny in the middle even though I didn’t slice into it until I’d eaten the first!) and a smoky hollandaise, or cubanaise as they call it. Like no benny I’d tasted before, the cubanaise and BBQ pulled pork worked wonders together.

The Mojo Duck Confit was another fab choice. A la dente brown rice cooked with rich pieces of duck confit, was served with fresh and juicy orange pieces, Thai basil, Thai Chilli and a poached duck egg on top, runny in the middle, to form a delicious combination of textures and rich and fresh flavours. The fresh orange surprised us as to how well it went with the overall dish, and the chilli added a nice touch of heat every now and then – not overly spicy.

Very full, and definitely satisfied, it’s almost a surprise there was any room left for the Mexican doughnuts – a must have when brunching at Asia de Cuba.

Two small round doughnuts, one stuffed with salted caramel sauce and the other with a rich chocolate sauce, were the perfect size for dessert after such a feast.

Super cute served as a pair, and seriously indulgent, they were warm, soft and sugary, with a thick oozing centre. Bottomless for those who dare try to fit another portion, they’re seriously moreish!

Five or six mimosas down (I lost count as they kept topping me up) I was certainly feeling more merry than I usually would at 3.30 on a Saturday afternoon. However that didn’t affect my ability to judge. It had definitely been one fantastic afternoon! Service was on another level to most places I’d been recently. Every course was superb and the unlimited brunch cocktails made for a fun two hours.

With brunch packages starting at £35pp (main course and bottomless brunch cocktails), it’s on the pricey side for bottomless brunches on the london food scene. The option we went for priced at £45. However it’s totally worth forking out, especially if you have a special occasion coming up!
