Getting up early(ish) on a Sunday, when you have no real plans can often feel like you made a wrong decision. But when you’re going out for breakfast, and it’s really good, it certainly makes up for the up and out. Don’t get me wrong, I love a slow Sunday morning, lazing in bed with a coffee until I’m feeling too lazy and fidgetty to keep going. Going out for breakfast, however, is one of my fave things to do – as I’m sure you already figured.

I’d been dying to try The Lighterman, perhaps purely because the location is pretty dreamy – it’s right on the edge of the canal of bustling Kings Cross/Granary Square. Inside, it’s super cute and sophisticated, with a light and bright minimalist style and lots of foliage. The tables by the window give a fab view of the canal whilst tucking in – so you can people or boat watch as you catch-up over eggs. Service is really friendly and helpful too, just adding to the whole experience.

The Lighterman Breakfast The Lighterman Breakfast

The weekend breakfast menu isn’t overly extensive…

…yet there’s plenty to choose from including fruits & grains, free range eggs and a full English.Β I was a little sad to see the baked eggs and pancakes are only on the weekday menu, but it made me choose something different. I always go for the baked eggs!

The Lighterman Breakfast

The Free range eggs (from St. Ewe in Cornwall), poached, on crushed avocado on toast with chilli and chives was amazing. The avocado was piled high, chunky and creamy. The poached eggs were perfectly done, still oozy in the middle. I opted for the dish with feta (because how can you not!?), of which there was more than enough. The bread used for the toast, was seriously delicious too! So flavoursome. Altogether it was one of the best avocado on toast we’ve had.

The Lighterman Breakfast

The Lighterman Full English Breakfast was fantastic too. A larger option consisting of eggs (anyway you like), Cumberland sausage, streaky bacon, hash brown, field mushrooms, cherry tomatoes and baked beans it was one meaty dish. Requested sunny side up, the eggs were once again cooked beautifully. It came with toast too (the same bread as the avo on toast!), and was one fab full english.

The Lighterman Breakfast

The side of vine tomatoes were lightly roasted, ensuring they kept their structure, yet were soft in the middle. Mushrooms are a must too – the field mushrooms and huge, and so tasty. Definitely add those to the avo! Might as well go all out.Β

As for the drinks (because it’s all about those too at breakfast!)…

…the menu featuresΒ all the usual hot drinks to accompany breakfast, as well as freshly squeezed juices and three of the most popular morning cocktails; a bloody Mary, peach Bellini and bucks fizz. Β

The Breakfast Tea (a Canton tea) infused the hot water easily and well – no hot milky water flavours here. There’s plenty of it, roughly a cup and a half but they’re large cups, and it certainly satisfied that “good cuppa” craving.

The freshly squeezed Apple, Pear and BlackBerry JuiceΒ  was delicious. It wasn’t too sweet, and you could tell it was super fresh, as we kept stirring to combine the light froth with the juice underneath.

You just HAVE to have hot drinks and juice for a good breakfast feast! And it really was one breakfast feast.

SUMMARY

  • Price: Breakfast dishes range from Β£4 to Β£12.50, sides are all Β£2.50, and drinks from Β£2.50 to Β£4.50 (apart from cocktails which are Β£8.50). Really not bad for a breakfast in such a beautiful location
  • Food: Generous portions, delicious food. The avocado on toast is one of the best I’ve had!
  • Drinks: the breakfast tea is pretty good, and the fresh juices are fab!
  • Atmosphere: relaxed atmosphere with friendly service. It’s a super cute location next to the canal!
  • Wait: do book if you can, but it wasn’t super busy when we visited one Sunday so it shouldn’t take too long for breakfast – I know they book up very quickly for dinner.

I’m definitely heading back! We went for a lovely walk along the canal after. Where’s the best place you’ve had avocado on toast?
