As much as I get excited about all the festive food at Christmas, there’s also all the Christmassy drinks.
From festive spiced coffees, to seasonal hot chocolates, mulled everything, eggnog and cocktails – ’tis the season to embrace it all!
But with so many choices, when both out for drinks or creating at home, how do you know where to start or even which are any good. So to help a little, I’ve popped a list below with some of our favourite festive drinks (Alex and mine), including a couple of festive cocktail recipes we created this year.
Coffee – Eggnog Latte
I tried this for the first time this year.
Indulgent, creamy and sweet, eggnog is perfect for serving in a latte. Ok, so it’s not low in fat (no you can’t order a skinny and yes I did try this!) but it’s totally worth the extra calories in your coffee – it’s not like you’re having three Starbucks a day! (If you are – please give me tips on how you afford it!)
With a shot or two of espresso, it’s the perfect seasonal pick-me-up. I know I’m having another one, two or even three of these before the season is out!
Hot Chocolate – Black Forest Hot Chocolate
This Costa classic is back year-on-year and for good reason. It’s my most-anticipated festive drink.
Super sweet, it’s a rich Costa hot chocolate with black cherry syrup, cream (optional) and cherry sauce. I order mine skinny, so it’s not as thick and creamy, and it’s incredibly delicious.
I loved this so much that Alex actually seeked out some Black Cherry syrup for my birthday one year so I could make them at home. Tip: Skip the cream and add marshmallows, for a gooey, tasty finish.
Wine – Mulled Wine
When out at Christmas markets and food markets, mulled wine is the one.
Almost cuddling the hot cup between your hands to warm up during the cold dark evenings, the spiced wine tastes like Christmas – a whole mug of festive spirit!
This is super easy to make at home too with red wine, and many supermarkets even sell a pre-prepared mulled wine spice mix. Super simple.
London Cocktail – Santa Merretto @ The Lampery
I had this one whilst tasting the festive menu late last month, and I can’t stop thinking about it.
Made from Amaretto, lime juice, passion fruit puree and grenadine with a rosemary and raspberry garnish – it’s one festive fruity number. It not only looks fab with it’s saucy rim, it’s sweet and absolutely delicious.
The Lampery is also a stunning, elegant spot, perfect for a relaxed festive cocktail or two after work in the run-up to Christmas with colleagues or friends.
Homemade Hot-tail – Rum-Pa-Pomme-Pomme
A collaboration with Alex, who is truly cocktail master in our flat, this combines spiced Caribbean rum, apple juice, alcoholic ginger beer, and seasonal spices, and is served warm in a wine glass with a cinnamon stick.
It’s almost like a mulled apple, with a subtle ginger taste coming through, the spiced rum accentuating the flavours further. It’s perfect for snuggling up on the sofa with, serving to guests who are over for a catch-up and nibbles, or as an after-dinner drink.
Ingredients (serves 1):
- 50ml Spiced Rum
- 120ml Apple Juice
- 45ml Crabbies Alcoholic Ginger Beer
- Cinnamon Stick
Combine all of the ingredients in a saucepan. heat over a low heat (do not allow to boil) for 10 minutes to allow the cinnamon and cloves to infuse the hot-tail. Serve in a wine glass with a cinnamon stick for decoration.
Tip: You could always prepare a larger batch in a slow cooker, leaving to heat over a low heat for 45 minutes, and leaving on ‘Keep Warm’ throughout the evening so you can keep going back to refill glasses.
Homemade Cocktail – Nuts About Christmas
Irish Cream Liqueur is a must-have at Christmas. Delicious solo over ice, it’s perfect to create a creamy cocktail for dessert or late evening with the family/friends by the fire.
- 1/2 Digestive Biscuit
- Chocolate Sauce
- 50ml Irish Cream Liqueur
- 1 tbsp. Hazelnut Syrup
- 100ml Chocolate Milk
- Ice cubes
Crush the digestive biscuit in a sandwich bag and pour out onto a small plate. On another plate squirt some chocolate sauce. Take a short glass and roll the rim in the chocolate sauce followed by the digestive biscuits to create a biscuit rim.
In a measuring cup, combine the Irish cream liqueur, hazelnut syrup and chocolate milk and carefully pour into the glass with the biscuit rim. Add a couple of ice cubes, and serve with a straw.
