Gastro-pubs have become a huge deal.
As we Britons have become even more intrigued and interested by great food, from presentation and fancy dishes to street food, some pubs have worked to keep up with society in order to not to be forgotten in the food scene, specialising in serving high-quality food. And the Jam Tree in Chelsea definitely keeps up with the times and gives customers what they want.
My friend Lucy and I visited the Jam Tree in Chelsea last week for a meal and girls catch-up. We love a mid-week plan to look forward to and break the week up.
It’s pretty easy to find, nestled on Kings Road and not far from Fulham Broadway station, you get a friendly welcome and there’s plenty of space to sit – including some really comfy sofas which is where we settled for the evening.
Absorbed by the menu we picked our drinks quickly, opting for some water and two cocktails – we decided we just had to try these out as they have so many cocktails which sound amazing from the ‘Netflix and Chill’ to the ‘Apple Crumble’.

Our first cocktails – the Gin ‘N’ Juice and the Wham Bam Thank You Jam. Lucy listening to the popping candy in her cocktail, it was incredible
Food choices weren’t too far behind, with the decision settling on two starters to share so we could try something new and also taste as much as possible. We ordered the Hummus and the Mirchi Ka Packoda & Mango Lassi (Spicy cauliflower and green chilli served in a fragrant batter). We also went for the Crisp Sea Bass which is served with little brown shrimps in a classic butter sauce, roast kale and squash, and the Guinea Fowl Casserole which is served with creamy mash and greens for our mains.
Our starters – the inside of the Mirchi Ka Packoda doesn’t look super appetising but it was SO tasty!
Both starters were delicious. The hummus wasn’t oily and it tasted so fresh and natural, although a tad garlicky, and the pitta was served warm which is always better. There’s something about warm bread isn’t there?
We’d never had anything like the Mirchi Ka Packoda before. Although battered, the pieces weren’t oily and didn’t taste ‘naughty’. Fresh, almost crisp but soft underneath the slight outer layer, these spicy pieces were incredible and well complimented by the mango lassi dip. My favourite were the pieces of green chilli!
We kept the Hummus to nibble on whilst awaiting the mains and also ordered another two cocktails to keep us going. The wait was a little longer than usual, and the waiter apologised mentioning there was a large group booking upstairs – more than understandable and nice to be kept informed. We were in no urgent rush anyway and it wasn’t too long before we soon had our mains laid out in front of us.

Presentation was fab and I was in heaven -the sea bass was just something else. The crisp upper layer and extremely tender flesh of the fish, along with the slightly crunchy brown shrimps, kale and soft squash, it all just went together so well. No condiments required, this dish went down a treat!
Lucy’s Guinea Fowl Casserole was just as good. The meat was so tender it pulled of the bone smoothly, the creamy mash just that and the greens served a la dente, so no mushy unflavoured sides! The Guinea Fowl, which we’d never tasted before, had a slightly stronger flavour to chicken, and was absolutely delicious.
The portions were very generous! Although, even when I was getting full I just had to finish mine as it tasted so good.
We couldn’t possibly have considered dessert but the menu did look tempting, so perhaps next time.
We highly recommend going along to try it out. With a fab atmosphere, friendly service and great location you’ll be sure to have a great evening out. The Jam Tree actually have 50% off food mon-fri throughout January so make the most of it and head down soon!
Lucy and I have already started making plans to go back for brunch as the menu looks fab and really reasonably priced too!
