Jerk. No I’m not giving out an insult, I’m talking about the Caribbean seasoning I’ve come to love. Give me anything jerk and it’s a winner – Alex’s mum makes the most incredible jerk chicken, and I love feasting on the stuff at Notting Hill Carnival too! I could probably live on the jerk chicken and wouldn’t get bored. One side which goes so well with jerk chicken is sweet potato – come on, Sweet potato is never going to have had its day. So getting creative in the kitchen recently I started experimenting with combining the flavours – a jerk sweet potato mash to go with my slow cooked BBQ chicken. Combining cooked sweet potato with a little butter and jerk paste, it made…

Cookie dough. My first thoughts used to be…Ben & Jerry’s ice cream pots. You know the one (the most popular right?), and I’d always consume as much as humanely possible, digging around to find the sweet, soft balls of unbaked cookie inside, like they were little treasures in a hunt. Well, that all changed when I spotted this new opening. Founded by cookie connoisseurs Jen and Hannah, Naked Dough serves up raw cookie dough like ice cream – in a tub, a cone or in a milkshake. No more hunting for those little pieces in the ice cream tub. The dough is based on home baking recipes and techniques, but using no egg so it’s safe to eat your whole tub! If you can manage…

Pasta. A dish I normally avoid when eating out. Not because the options don’t look tasty, but solely because I think I could probably make that dish, or something similar, at home. I know what you’re thinking, look at that cooking ego, but I know I’m not the only one who thinks this way. Pasta from a street food stand/van, is usually bottom of my list too – unless it’s quirky and new (i.e. stirred inside a huge cheese). Ok and Mac’n’cheese I count separately as you can’t really compare that to other pasta dishes, it’s my ultimate weakness. I always think that pasta from somewhere like a street food stand would be made in bigger batches, have been cooking for God knows how long,…

Is it just me or does this warm weather change your appetite? Don’t get me wrong, I still enjoy the odd comfort meal – burgers, chilli, sausage and mash – but quite often, I don’t fancy anything too heavy. Not too carby, or meaty. Something with plenty of veg so I feel like I’m nourishing myself, especially after a long day at work. A couple of weeks ago I’d decided I was making turkey kofte style kebabs, yet when I got home, I’d completely changed my mind – the pitta just wasn’t what I wanted. So whipping up Alex’s kebab, I decided I’d do myself something different. Throwing together some vegetables I had in the fridge, tossing them in oil and roasting them in herbs,…

Weekend mornings. Always a debate as to whether to use them for a lie in to catch-up on sleep or get up at about the same time and make the most of the day. For me, it’s always a mix. I like to get up early one morning and have a little lie in the other. On my early morning, gym is always top of my priority list. A class or intense session to start the weekend well – or prepare my body for the weekend treats – and some ultimate ME time. Time when I can unwind, de-stress and reset, and of course feel amazing afterwards. Last Saturday, I got the chance to try one of the classes at Virgin Active at the O2…
